The World Travel Awards (WTA) held again this year, and Portugal was chosen as “Best Destination in Europe.” In this category, Portugal beat out several other nominated European countries, including Austria, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, which were in the Top 5. Meanwhile, Greece, which won the title last year, had to settle for sixth place on the list of nominees.
This “Best Destination in Europe” award is not the first time the country of footballer Cristiano Ronaldo has won the award six times. Portugal has previously won the same award six times.
As quoted on the Turismo de Portugal website, Portugal’s Secretary of State for Tourism, Trade, and Services, Pedro Machado, said that this award “reflects the hard work, dedication, and quality of all the professionals who daily make tourism one of the main pillars of the Portuguese economy.”
The World Travel Awards (WTA) is an annual awards program, established in 1993, that recognizes excellence in the global travel, tourism, and hospitality industry. Awards are presented at regional gala events throughout the year, culminating in a Grand Final. There are over one hundred categories for nominations, divided into 10 global regions: Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Central America, the Indian Ocean, the Middle East, North America, Oceania, and South America.
